It has just come to light that Microsoft has been awarded a software patent for a "Digital Rights Management" operating system. This development shows us exactly where we as consumers stand. Microsoft doesn't have to offer anything to the government; it only has to hold possession of a patent covering the "DRM" elements of its latest OS. In my opinion, this patent seems to provide an (almost) assured trajectory toward establishing the terms by which the public's ability to communicate digital information will be controlled.

We have always been information producers, and we must not accede to the interests of those who do not regard the public at large as full and equal citizens, but rather as mere consumers.

Bill Gates is planning to take over the world-FACT! I dont see the panic. If your office is bugged, most are already, then as long as your not doing anything naughty then you have no need to worry. The problem starts when THEY want to invade our personal space, like our homes. Invasion software, and SnoopWare already exsist on most PCs around the world. Win XP for one. This should be more worrying then industry trying to be more competative. If you start to see bogey men in the corner then its time to see a shrink about that paranoia. Big brother has always been watching us, Governments, businesses, the Police all have means to track every aspect of our lives. But has it diminished your quality of life? No. It may have improved it....
Learn to love Big Brother, he is your friend, he is all our friends.........

It's like saying 'the guy across the road looking into your house with binoculars' doesn't bother you. Even though he isn't seeing anything real important, he's intruding on your privacy.
Here is some trivia you may not be aware of, did you know that before the Berlin Wall fell, over a 1/3 of the population of East Germany were spying against the rest of the population. That's not a lye.
I know that would never happen now in a non communist society. But take a moment, step back and imagine Gattica ( that's probably not how you spell it ). Imagine a society of altered humans who were no societies outcasts but where the naturally grown humans were the outcasts.

BUT as filmmakers I think we owe it to ourselves and our audiences to be aware of these issues and ramifications thereof.

I mean, look at OPEC ... a legal cartel fixing oil prices, fscking amazing!!

im sorry miker but this has severe implications for users of XP' s built in editing package because this means that any peice of artwork produced on the XP DV softwear becomes property of Microsoft - this has happened before with Word98 when Microsoft tried to get this DRM secured - now i truely fear its potential, miker you must over react... no you WILL overreact when Microsoft take away your freedom and you just let it happen
